Si Fi Channel now SyFy? Huh?

No matter how you spell it, its still pronounced Si Fi. So will it still be the channel I love to have on all day long? Be it working, playing Warcraft, or just kinda chilling. Sci Fi channel is my favorite channel to watch. It’s constantly on. It’s on right now. Ghost Hunters is on. Not really a Sci Fi show, but it is a good show. So why have they changed the name?
“By changing the name to Syfy, which remains phonetically identical, the new brand broadens perceptions and embraces a wider range of current and future imagination-based entertainment beyond just the traditional sci-fi genre, including fantasy, supernatural, paranormal, reality, mystery, action and adventure. It also positions the brand for future growth by creating an ownable trademark that can travel easily with consumers across new media and nonlinear digital platforms, new international channels and extend into new business ventures.”
REALITY Oh come on. Stan Lee’s Super Hero I guess was reality TV? Can Si Fi channel properly mold into SyFy? A television network that offers predominantly Sci Fi oriented programing? Or will it turn into just another station that offers the same drama and crap everyone else does?
I guess I could start with asking, what is Sci Fi? According to Wikipedia:
“Science fiction (abbreviated SF or sci-fi with varying punctuation and capitalization) is a broad genre of fiction that often involves speculations based on current or future science or technology. Science fiction is found in books, art, television, films, games, theatre, and other media. In organizational or marketing contexts, science fiction can be synonymous with the broader definition of speculative fiction, encompassing creative works incorporating imaginative elements not found in contemporary reality; this includes fantasy, horror, and related genres.” – Sci Fi Channel
So, a reality TV show with a Sci Fi theme may work? Mystery, Action and Adventure can all fit into Sci Fi also. If the content theme is right? What constitutes Sci Fi? Again we look to Wikipidia for a clear definition:
* A setting in the future, in alternative time lines, or in a historical past that contradicts known
facts of history or the archeological record
* A setting in outer space, on other worlds, or involving aliens[4]
* Stories that involve technology or scientific principles that contradict known laws of nature[5]
* Stories that involve discovery or application of new scientific principles, such as time travel or
psionics, or new technology, such as nanotechnology, faster-than-light travel or robots, or of
new and different political or social systems (e.g. a dystopia)
Hmmmm
“Syfy more clearly captures the mainstream appeal of the world’s biggest entertainment category, and reflects the network’s ongoing strategy to create programming that’s more accessible and relatable to new audiences. Syfy will continue to celebrate the traditional roots of the genre, while opening the brand to accommodate a broader range of imagination-based entertainment.” – Sci Fi Channel
I guess i’l keep an open mind about this. Here’s hoping this doesn’t ruin the best station available for anything and everything to do with Si Fi.
This change takes place in June.
