David Tennant in Fright Night

Friday, September 3rd, 2010 | Movies, Sci-fi | No Comments

Remember Fright Night? You know, the vampire movie from 1985. Back when vampires were vampires and didn’t sparkle? If you never saw this movie, see the original, as there is a 50/50 chance it’s about to be ruined.

I say this as most remakes suck. They are either remade by people who don’t know what they are doing or just want to make a quick buck off the current trend (In this case, vampires.)  and half ass it.

HOWEVER! David Tennant will be playing a ‘updated’  Peter Vincent. The character will be trading in his gentle old man appearance and horror tv show titled “Fright Night”. Instead, the new version has a Hard Rock Hotel show called “Fright Night”, is an illusionist  and looks more like a Chris Angel look like.

To me, David Tennant gives the movie a chance. Even if the writers botch the story and the director seems to have steered it into a wall. David Tennant could probably  carry the movie with one hand tied behind his back.

6 reasons why the Smurfs movie will be bad.

Thursday, June 17th, 2010 | Movies, Sci-fi | 2 Comments

1. Gargamel no longer wants to eat the Smurfs. “Now, Gargamel simply wants to capture the Smurfs to serve as charms, whose mystical essence will make his inept magic more powerful — and dangerous.” So rather than eat them, he wants their souls! Mwahaha?

2. The original Smurfs show was set in Middle Ages with knights, kinda and wizards. The movie will start in the middle ages. Gargamel will be chasing the Smurfs. “Clumsy goes the wrong way into a forbidden grotto where a few other Smurfs follow“  Damn you Clumsy! This bad plot is all your fault! “Because it’s a blue moon, there’s a magical portal that transports them to Central Park.”

3. It’s in modern times. Did we have to modernize this? Well sure we did. We want the younger generation to latch onto it so maybe we can reboot with a new cartoon and merch line..right? The movie would be better suited if it was kept in the time frame the original writers intended.

4. Poor writing? Idiots in charge? I was reading the article on USA Today, where it was explained there is a scene where Niel Patrick Harris is putting on a tie. (Yes folks, Niel and his wife take them in. Yay!) He explains to the Smurfs that he has to wear this to work, as everyone has to. They don’t understand why everyone wear the same things…… They don’t understand? Smurfs all wear the same thing, how can they not understand?

5. The people behind the Scoobie Doo live action movies are involved.  I’m not sorry when I say.. the Scoobie movies sucked.

6. It’s the Smurfs….

SyFy Re-Imagined fairy tales starts with Beauty and the Beast

Monday, February 1st, 2010 | Movies, Sci-fi | 1 Comment

Syfy is lining up a franchise of sorts, re-imagined fairy tales and legends.  The movies will air during SyFy’s Original Movie Saturday.  The first movie we will see is Beauty and the Beast with premiers Feb. 27 at 9PM

Here is the description from SyFy:

Beauty and the Beast -  In this gritty celebration of Valentine’s Day, a young Beauty (Estella Warren) with a gift for healing helps a deformed Prince (Rhett Gilles, Wraiths of Roanoke) regain his throne and defeat the ruthless nobleman who wants to be king — and then together they try to destroy a power-hungry witch.

Ok, sounds like a re-telling on the surface. However, SyFy’s overview of the other movies coming sounds more promising.

Vitale also announced a preliminary development slate for the new line of Syfy Original Movies including:

Red — A young woman who is a descendant of the real Little Red Riding Hood brings her fiancé home, where he meets the family and learns about their business – hunting werewolves. He’s skeptical until bitten by a werewolf. When her family insists he must be killed, Red tries saving him.

Hansel — Twenty years after his encounter with the witch, a grown-up Hansel returns to the haunted forest, seeking revenge. But there’s a surprise waiting – his sister Gretel (who he thought had been killed) is the witch’s protégée.

8TH Voyage of Sinbad — Sinbad searches for the golden head of the long lost Colossus of Rhodes and, instead, discovers an island where the mythical Minotaur still rules, protecting a vast treasure. Sinbad and his crew have to battle the creature and its minions to get the treasure and save their own lives.

Aladdin (working title) — After accidentally releasing an evil genie from an ancient lamp, Aladdin must find a way to imprison the genie again before it wreaks havoc on the world.

Black Forest — A group of naïve tourists take a sightseeing tour into a supposed enchanted forest, where they encounter evil creatures from the world of fantasy. Trapped in the Black Forest, their only hope of survival is fighting their way out.

I can’t wait to see the Little Red Riding Hood and Hansel and Gretel ones. Good ideas presented there.

Transformers 3 – Less explosions?

Saturday, January 16th, 2010 | Movies, Sci-fi | No Comments

Pretty much everyone at this point has seen the two Transformers movies based off the Hasbro toys and cartoon from the 80s. (If you haven’t, go see it you noob.)

The first one was good. It told a story from start to finish. Giant robots and explosions is always fun.

The second one was good.  It told a story from start to finish. Even though it felt very repeatish of the first movie’s theme with a few things tossed in. “A few things” as in more explosions, robots and Megan Fox’s boobs bouncing around every-time she was running away from an explosion. You would think she could afford a support bra. (Yaya I know it was done on purpose for sex appeal.)

Don’t read this wrong. I loved the movies, they were great. But it felt to me like there was so much story to be told that was left out for explosions.

Feel the same way? Great! Here is some new that may interest you.

Michael Bay is in the pre-production stages of producing the next Transformers movie. The movie is slated to come out in summer of 2011. Bay told Los Angeles Times’ Heat Vision Blog the next movie  “won’t be as robot-heavy and there will be fewer explosions.”  “It gets much more into the robot character. The last time you kind of met a few of the robots; this time you’re gonna get a much cooler landscape.”

Spider-Man 4 – Raimi and Maguire out. Story Reboot Incoming.

Monday, January 11th, 2010 | Movies, Sci-fi | No Comments

With script delays and original cast members  committed, the axe has fallen on Spider-Man 4. With it goes the plans for the 5th and 6th movie that scripts were being written for.

Things looked good for the fourth installment of the movie franchise.  This was despite conflict between Raimi and Sony on which villains should be featured.

As of December 8, 2009, names like Anne Hathaway and John Malkovich were attached to the film. John Malkovich was in negotiations to play Vulture, and that Anne Hathaway would play Felicia Hardy. Though Hardy would not have transformed into the Black Cat, as in the comics. Instead, Raimi’s Felicia was expected to become a brand-new superpowered figure called the Vulturess.

As of January 5, 2010,  Anne Hathaway had been dropped from the film, while John Malkovich confirmed that he will be playing Vulture in the film.

Today it was announced that Spider-Mand 4 had been canceled.

Nikki Finke’s Deadline Hollywood is now reporting that director Sam Raimi and his entire cast, led by Tobey Maguire, have dropped out. The Spider-Man movie franchise will be rebooted starting in 2012 with a whole new director and cast.

The new direction:

“Peter Parker is going back to high school when the next Spider-Man hits theaters in the summer of 2012.

Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios announced today they are moving forward with a film based on a script by James Vanderbilt that focuses on a teenager grappling with both contemporary human problems and amazing super-human crises.” – Sony Pictures

Seeming to still be on track is the Venom movie due in 2012. This movie will “spin off” of the first three Spider-Man movies. However, Venom will be portrayed as an ati-hero.

Saturday, January 9th, 2010 | Movies, Sci-fi | 2 Comments

It’s a book within a book, within a book, within a book, within a book, within a…Get it?

Each book covers different subjects such as locations, characters, design concept so on and so on. The smallest book holds a “key” which is really a USB drive with images that can be used in print.

I couldn’t help but wonder about something. I checked Ebay, no kits on auction yet. Give time, im sure there will be someone, somewhere who will look at this “press kit” and see $$$$.

The Karate Kid – Remake with Jaden Smith coming in 2010.

Sunday, December 27th, 2009 | Movies | 3 Comments

“12-year-old Dre Parker (Smith) could’ve been the most popular kid in Detroit, but his mother’s (Henson) latest career move has landed him in China. Dre immediately falls for his classmate Mei Ying — and the feeling is mutual — but cultural differences make such a friendship impossible. Even worse, Dre’s feelings make an enemy of the class bully, Cheng. In the land of kung fu, Dre knows only a little karate, and Cheng puts “the karate kid” on the floor with ease. With no friends in a strange land, Dre has nowhere to turn but maintenance man Mr. Han (Chan), who is secretly a master of kung fu. As Han teaches Dre that kung fu is not about punches and parries, but maturity and calm, Dre realizes that facing down the bullies will be the fight of his life.” – IMDB

So to break it down: We have a a 12 year old rather then a 16 year old. Matter a fact most of the characters are now 12ish.  The ‘Karate Kid’ is in Beijing, China rather then Reseda, California.  Theres a girl involved, but the question I ask. Does a 12 year old boy need to go through all this for a 12 year old girl? Part of the original movie there was always this undertone of danger, as Karate can kill. 12 year old’s possibly killing 12 year old’s on the play ground? Eh.

Over all it seems like the story is a stand alone “remake”. Some elements from original have been ‘borrowed’ otherwise it looks to be it’s own story.  Kinda like “The Next Karate Kid” with Hilary Swank. Except this movie might see sequels with Jaden’s Daddy, Will Smith producing the movie.

The thing that got me the most, see I watched the trailer three times. And every time I seen skinny Jaden Smith working his moves and making a comment all chill. I thought of Riley Freeman from The Boondocks.

X-Men: First Class Origins, more X-Men movies to come.

Friday, December 18th, 2009 | Movies, Sci-fi | No Comments

x_men_xavier

Bryan Singer signs on for the next X-Men Movie, First Class Origins. The movie will be about the formation of the Xavier Institute.

“This is the formative years of Xavier and Magneto, and the formation of the school and where [their] relationship took a wrong turn. There is a romantic element, and some of the mutants from X-Men will figure into the plot, though I don’t want to say which ones. There will be a lot of new mutants and a great villain.”  Bryan Singer, Variety

When they say “new mutants” im guessing they mean “old” favorites but new to the movies?  The movie has potential to give us a glimpse into how each major player entered into the X-Men.

A question remains, what happened to X-Men 4? Future X-Men movies, what are we looking at?
